The White County School System is located in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains approximately 75 miles northeast of Atlanta, Georgia. The towns of Cleveland and Helen represent the population centers of the district. The community has a strong base in both agriculture and tourism with timber and poultry farming as the primary sources of agriculture revenue. The town of Helen generates revenue from tourism throughout the year.

There are six public schools serving the approximately 3,700 school-aged children in the county: Jack P. Nix Primary School (Grades K-2), White County Intermediate School (Grades 3-5), Mt. Yonah Elementary School (Grades K-5), White County Middle School (Grades 6-8), White County Ninth Grade Academy (Grade 9), and White County High School (Grades 10-12). In an effort to accommodate rapid growth and move towards the neighborhood schools concept, additional properties for future schools have been purchased in different geographical locations in the county.

The recent and sustained population growth in White County can be attributed to its natural beauty: green, unspoiled mountains; cold, clear streams; rolling pastures dotted with grazing cattle; two state parks; and several major recreational areas within the Chattahoochee National Forest.
