Recent Articles by Gordon SawyerI am a conservative, and as such I believe government has a responsibility to create a level playing field, and to keep any one corporation from gaining a monopoly position in the marketplace. Nancy Pelosi and some other Democrats pushing Obamacare have been very direct in saying anyone standing up in a town hall meeting and opposing that plan is un-American. One of the Democrats strongest allies in the newspaper columnist world is the column written by Cokie and Steve Roberts, and the other day they were doing what all good Obama supporters are doing nowadays, and that is criticizing we-the-people. The great American debate about socialized medicine, funded and controlled by the federal government, is not new here in Northeast Georgia. Way down here where we-the-people live and work, you and I have a decision to make … more so right now than ever before in my lifetime. Are we going to stand up for our right to make money, and the freedom to spend it as we choose? I was listening to President Obama the other day listing all the things he is going to do for us as president, and how he would pay for it by raising taxes on those who make more than $1-million a year. You have heard it before: if you do not know history, you are doomed to repeat it. There’s a white-columned home up in middle Tennessee called “rattle and snap”, and history says it got that name because the original owner got in a crap game one night and got very deep in debt to another man. It was a conversation between a Georgia business guy and another Georgian who has been active in giving financial support to Republican candidates for years. Pravda, the Russian news agency, has an office in the U. S., and it has a web site in which they translate most of their stories into English... The U. S. government now owns enough of America’s financial industry to control it from the top down. So...the United States government and the auto unions are now in the car business. Every once in a blue moon a political candidate comes along with absolutely the right set of credentials, and the proven leadership abilities, for the position they are seeking, and to deal with the issues to be faced once in office. Almost everybody knows times are tough. Certainly working folks and families know it. Small, local businesses are hanging on for dear life. Last week I did a commentary on how fortunate we are to have award-winning local news operations in Gainesville rather than relying on Atlanta media for information and opinion. It all started after I did a small business marketing workshop for the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce... The “Tea Parties” were immense all over America. Gainesville had close to 1,000 jamming Poultry Park. The people of Hall County are special day-in and day-out, and I consider it a privilege to live among you...to call you my neighbors. There’s a long-standing political truism that says “the devil is in the details”. The threesome setting the course for America right now includes Pelosi, Obama and Reid, and the more I hear announcement after announcement of their plans, the more I think: haven’t I heard this before?
