U.S. Representative Nathan Deal
WASHINGTON - Congressman Nathan Deal says he plans to write President Obama asking for proof that he was born in this country.

The Gainesville Republican said Friday while he has no reason to believe that the President is not a legal U.S. citizen, the public documents released so far leave enough question in his mind. The U.S. Constitution requires that people who serve as President be born in the U.S.

Deal made his comments one day after an online chat as part of his gubernatorial campaign in which he fielded questions from the public... telling one that he plans planned to join other members of Congress in writing the President about his citizenship.

A movement across the country known as "birthers" has been - since before he took office - questioning whether Obama was born in this country.
